The Carsten Institute of Arizona is licensed by the state and accredited by the National Accreditation Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NAACCS). It is the first institute in the Aveda Schools Network. The institute was founded by Carsten Wilms almost three decades ago under the guidance of Horst Rechelbacher, the founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients.

The institute teaches exclusively the French Haircutting Technique, a technique used by some of the most successful hairdressers in New York City, like Frédéric Fekkai, Yves Durif, Marc Garrison, and Alain Pinon of Salon AKS.
